Air Force Base Overberg (TFDC), outside Bredasdorp, is once again presenting an air show on 21 April 2012. We promise that this event will be, as always, of international standard. The air show is unique in the sense that it is the only air show in SA where the public has the opportunity to witness a SA Air Force Capability Demonstration with live weapon delivery from fighter aircraft and helicopters.
On Friday 20 April 2012 the civilian aviation fraternity of SA is afforded the opportunity to fly in to the Base and participate in the air show on the Saturday as spectators or participants. In 2007 a total of 178 light aircraft owners from across SA, made use of this opportunity, making it arguably the biggest Fly-in in Africa. To encourage this effort, our theme this year is “Sport and Recreational Flying in SA”. The Homebuilt- and Light-Aircraft Industries are especially invited to come and exhibit their products.
This year, while commemorating “25 Years of Test Flying in the Overberg”, we are in partnership with “Buite Ekspo”, an events company which will add a new flavour to the air show. In addition to the usual food stalls and other vendors, an “Outdoor Life Expo” will also be on offer for the ±20 000 spectators expected to attend.
The greatest news for us, however, is the signing up of Kyknet (Mnet) as media sponsor of the event, which will ensure national TV coverage of the show in the run up to, as well as after the show. The air show will officially be known as the “Kyknet Overberg Air Show”.
Besides the mentioned Air Capability Demonstration, a full program of Air Force and selected Civilian air show displays will entertain the crowd from 10:00 to 17:00 on 21 April. Jet aircraft such as the Gripen and Hawk, and Oryx, Rooivalk and Agusta helicopters, as well as the SA Air Force Astra Aerobatic Team - the Silver Falcons- to mention but a few, are promised. Civilian Fire Bomber aircraft will also demonstrate their efficacy at fighting fires by dropping water on burning objects. A number of ex-military aircraft (including fighters) and specialised civilian aerobatic aircraft will be put through their paces during the day.
Friday 20 April is set aside for participating display pilots to perform validation flights and for learners from schools in the surrounding area to visit the air show as part of the SA Air Force’s Youth Aviation Awareness program “Siyandiza” (We Fly). Learners will be afforded the opportunity to learn more about aviation in general as well as job opportunities in the SA Air Force whilst watching the final air show dress rehearsal. This day has been set aside for this purpose exclusively and not open for the general public. Any schools interested in attending on 20 April are welcome to contact Capt Kapp or Capt Mekgwe at AFB Overberg, telephone 028 425 4111. For general information and more details as well as contact numbers visit our website: (see “tab” contacts).
The traditional charity wine tasting and auction will also take place on Friday evening 20 April at 18h30. The ±250 guests at this prestigious event will be entertained by a short air show whilst enjoying sundowners of fine wines of the Overberg, Boland and Breede River Valley. Bookings for the wine tasting and auction are compulsory and can be made through the website: (see “tab”, wine auction) by contacting Lt Col Erwin Kotze at 028 425 4111Theme:
